Kuwait Civil ID Validity Periods

Civil ID validity differs depending on residency type — knowing which applies to you determines how often renewal is required.

Renewed with the sponsor’s iqamaValidity PeriodNotes
Kuwaiti national10 yearsLinked to national records
Expatriate resident1 to 3 yearsMatches residency permit duration
Domestic workerMatches employer residencyRenewed with sponsor’s iqama
Child (expat)Matches father’s residencyRegistered under father’s file

Civil ID validity for expatriates matches the duration of the residency permit (iqama) — when the residency is renewed, the Civil ID validity is extended to match.

Kuwaiti citizens receive Civil IDs valid for ten years from the date of issue.

Kuwait law requires all residents to carry a valid Civil ID at all times — an expired card results in fines separate from the renewal fee itself.

In practice the PACI website Card Validity tab and the SMS to 1818 return the same result. The SMS method is the fastest option when you are away from a computer — the reply typically arrives within one to two minutes and shows the expiry date without requiring any login or account.

What an Expired Civil ID Means

An expired Civil ID blocks access to most government and private services until renewed. Banking transactions, residency renewal, vehicle registration, and government healthcare all require a valid card at the point of service.

As of 2026, no Kuwait government ministry processes applications for residents whose Civil ID shows as expired in the PACI system.

Fines begin accruing from the expiry date. The fine amount increases the longer the card remains unrenewed. Full fine details and payment steps are on our Civil ID fine check page.

FAQS:

How do I find my Civil ID serial number for the validity check

The Civil ID serial number is the shorter reference number printed on the front of the card — it is not the same as the 12-digit Civil ID number used for status checks. The serial number is typically located below the cardholder’s name on the card face. If you cannot locate it, the Kuwait eGovernment Portal at e.gov.kw also accepts the barcode number printed on the back of the card as an alternative input for validity enquiries.

Does Civil ID validity automatically extend when residency is renewed?

No. Residency renewal and Civil ID renewal are two separate transactions processed through two different authorities. The Ministry of Interior (MOI) processes residency permits. PACI processes Civil ID renewals. Completing a residency renewal does not automatically trigger a Civil ID renewal — both must be submitted separately, though the new Civil ID validity period will match the newly issued residency duration once processed.

Can I check Civil ID validity without the physical card

Yes. The PACI website validity check and the SMS method both require only the Civil ID number or serial number — the physical card does not need to be present. If you do not have the card with you, use the 12-digit Civil ID number you have memorised or stored digitally to run the check via any of the five available channels.
